About CelluRods®
CelluForce sells its cellulose nanocrystals under the CelluRods® brand.
CelluRods® are high-quality sulfated cellulose nanocrystals that are dispersible in many media. They have many notable physical, chemical, optical, and electrical attributes that make them valuable for a range of applications:
- Strength comparable to Kevlar™ as well as hard metals and their alloys
- Thixotropic behavior (shear thinning) when in suspension
- Hydrophobic and hydrophilic crystal surfaces for stabilization of emulsions
- High chemical reactivity facilitating customization for various applications
CelluRods® can enhance the performance of several products in many different applications in addition to being sustainable and biodegradable.
Product Grades
CelluRods® come in different grades. Formulators should select the right product based on their intended application and dispersion media. CelluForce continues to develop different cellulose nanocrystals to help customers improve their product formulations.
CelluRods® 100 series
The 100 series is CelluForce’s main family of products composed of sodium-form neutralized cellulose nanocrystals.
CelluRods® 100 are available in powder form (CelluRods® 100P) or as a 7.5% w/w water suspension (CelluRods® 100L). The powder allows easy transportation and the opportunity to mix in media other than water while the suspension offers an immediately accessible small average particle size because the product has never been dried. The spray-dried powder form can be redispersed in water and certain polar solvents and media. As a rule of thumb, solvents with a dielectric constant above 35 can be used.
CelluRods® 100P are also offered as an excipient grade (CelluRods® 100PE) that conforms with EXCiPACT good manufacturing practices.
CelluRods® 110L are a liquid suspension available for applications needing an immediately deliverable very small particle size such as for printed electronics or barrier coatings.

Cellulose nanocrystals are quite new. However, over 2 000 articles are published every year on various uses of cellulose nanocrystals. The best way for you to develop your application is to search the literature for relevant information and experimenting with the product in your application.
We can offer the following guidance for selecting the right product:
- Always start with the CelluRods® 100P product. Make sure full redispersion is achieved.
- If you need an immediately accessible small average particle size or if you want to compare your dispersion technique, select CelluRods® 100L.
- If you want an even smaller average particle size, select CelluRods® 110L.
Powder Dispersion Technique
