CNC for enhanced oil recovery

Oil recovery from fractured oil reservoirs is challenging. Water flooding in its many forms is less than ideal. Salim Raza (U of E&T Peshawar) and Ian Gates (University of Calgary) have now shown that making a nanofluid with 2% CNC and water increases oil recovery up to 98%. The enormous increase is achieved by microemulsion formation upstream of the main interface. The best result is obtained with 2% CNC but 1% CNC provides a respectable 85% recovery with appropriate fluid flow.
