Cellulose nanocrystals to enhance the performance of biodegradable plastic bags

Published On: 2022-09-08Categories: CNC Community

The mechanical property performance of polyethylene used in disposable bags can be difficult to match with a biodegradable alternative but collaborating researchers at institutes in Korea have achieved superior tensile strength, toughness and tear resistance by the incorporation of CNC into a modified poly(butylene succinate) (PBS). The resulting composite designated as PBS-3C in the graphs and images below was noted by the authors as being twice as strong as polyethylene giving the opportunity for lower gauge films.
