Cellulose nanocrystals in epoxy resins (part 3)

Image showing how cellulose nanocrystals (green rods) improve the mechanical properties of epoxy resins (orange hexagons) by linking to them via sulfonate groups (blue circles) and also facilitate thermal degradation of the epoxy.

In previous publication vignettes on this topic, the focus has been on the strength property enhancement in glass fibre-reinforced epoxy resins afforded through the addition of cellulose nanocrystals. Kang, Myles, and Harris from the National Research Council of Canada have confirmed the strength property enhancement but have also identified that the epoxy can be made more easily thermally degradable. The advantage to this is that costly structures, such as electronic systems, that have been protected with epoxy coatings can be more easily recycled and disassembled. Competing approaches offered on the market for this purpose are prohibitively expensive.
